Long Life Of Your Carpet

Some years ago residential carpet was very simple. The yarn was either nylon or polyester. The only advantage that polyester had over nylon was that polyester is a natural stain inhibitor. Nylon on the other hand, had a much greater advantage, in that nylon is a much tougher yarn, much more durable and resilient. Nylon carpets are also treated at the manufacturer with a floral chemical to give stain protection.
These days things are a little more complicated in that the manufacturer Mohawk has started experimenting with polyester blends. I won't go into the explanation here simply because I still cannot find a Mohawk manufacturer rep that can clearly explain to me what exactly what the fiber is made of.
Polyesters, polyester blends are fine, but you simply cannot beat the time tested quality of nylon.
nylon has it all: stain resistance, durability and many styles to choose from.
At this point of my carpet career, which keeps pulling me back in, I've seen just about everything. Not everything, but just about everything. I have seen polyester carpet installed and 6 months later look like it was installed 30 years ago, and on the other extreme, I've seen nylon carpet look like it was installed 6 months ago, but it was actually installed 30 years prior.
Long story short. If you want quality carpet go with a nylon. Simple.
Now, if your existing carpet is still in pretty good shape, you may not need to spend thousands of dollars for brand new carpet. Although I don't do carpet cleaning anymore, I still do carpet repairs and restretching. After the carpet is fixed and we send in one of our certified carpet restoration specialists to clean, you could be very happy that you only just spent $200 to $500 to bring your existing carpet back to life.

Carpet Re-Stretch Or New

Through my experience most carpet can be saved. Of course their are times when I'm called out to do a re-stretch and I have to tell the people "This carpet is to far gone". It's a judgment call based upon experience. Sometimes to re-stretch carpet throughout with many bedrooms and hallways it can become a little more costly based on what's involved (tearing seams apart, i.e. carpet surgery.....etc), but if the carpet can be saved it's always much cheaper than installing new carpet. Compare the cost. To install new quality carpet in say three bedrooms and a hallway could cost around $3,000 to $4,000, and that's on the low end. To re-stretch the same carpeted area would usually cost between $175 to $250, that is if the carpet can be saved.
